How WRITE NOW! began
Shizue Seigel usually found herself the only writer of color in creative writing classes and workshops, so when she received a San Francisco Arts Commission Individual Artist Commission in 2015 to work on her memoir, she began offering Write Now! workshops in the Western Addition’s rapidly gentrifying Fillmore and Japantown neighborhoods.Six sessions at the San Francisco African American Historical & Cultural Society and the National Japanese American Historical Society grew into on-going monthly workshops that have reached over 50 beginning and experienced writers from 12 to 80. On-going FREE workshops continue monthly at the San Francisco Main Library. Our two anthologies are:
and STANDING STRONG: FILLMORE & JAPANTOWN (2016) both published by Pease Press and launched with creative showcases at the San Francisco Main Library.
Supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
